From hide to leather
Tanning is THE essential step in leather production. It stabilizes the hide, protecting it from decay and transforming it into a durable, long-lasting material. Since the Stone Age, humans have used various methods to preserve animal hides – such as soaking them in urine, fat or smoke tanning, or utilizing local plants. We too rely on vegetable tanning, one of the oldest and most sustainable methods.
In collaboration with the leather factory August Renz leather factory from southern Germany, we process goat skins and cattle hides without the use of harmful chemicals. Instead, we use natural plant extracts from woods, barks, and fruits. These tannins not only make the leather durable and environmentally friendly, but they also give it a distinctive, natural scent that intensifies over time – a sign of the material's quality and freshness.
